Former NBA Rookie of the Year Malcolm Brogdon, one of the best all-around guards in the Eastern Conference, will apparently return from injury on Wednesday night when the Indiana Pacers host the New York Knicks with Indiana as a short favorite on the NBA odds.

Last Meeting
This is the first meeting of the season between the Knicks and Pacers. Their final meeting last year was on Feb. 27 in New York and the Knicks won 110-107. Julius Randle scored 28 points and grabbed 10 rebounds, while RJ Barrett added 24 for New York. Knicks reserve guard Frank Ntiliknia made two free throws with 2.9 seconds left to seal the win. Pacers star guard Malcolm Brogdon didn’t play.
After losing seven straight regular season matchups in the series dating back to the 2017-18 season, New York is 3-2 against the Pacers over the last five meetings.

The Knicks had a three-game winning streak snapped Monday in a 113-104 home loss to Toronto. The Raptors surged into the lead by outscoring the Knicks 38-22 in the third quarter. The Raptors had a 21-3 advantage in fast-break points, turning 17 Knicks turnovers into 20 points. Anunoby pointed to that as a key to the third quarter. The Knicks lost most of a 15-point lead they had with 4 1/2 minutes left in the first half. “It was really the middle of the second quarter. That’s where the game turned,” Coach Tom Thibodeau said.
RJ Barrett hit 9-of-13 shots and five 3-pointers for a team-high 27 points to go along with six rebounds and a steal in 39 minutes. He’s scored at least 20 in three straight games and has hit double figures in all but one game thus far. Barrett is has hit 11 3-pointers over his last two games.
Julius Randle hit 7-of-14 shots and four 3-pointers for 22 points, nine rebounds, five assists and a block. Randle had scored 16 or fewer points in his previous three games but got back on track. Kemba Walker had 15 points three rebounds, three assists and a block. Walker got off to a slow start in his Knicks tenure with three straight games of 11 or fewer points, but has now scored at least 15 in four contests in a row. His 3.1 assists per game thus far would represent a career-low mark for him.
The Knicks are listing big men Taj Gibson and Nerlens Noel questionable for this one. Gibson sprained his left ankle in Monday’s loss to the Raptors, but was able to participate in Tuesday’s practice. Gibson’s injury forced rookie Jericho Sims into action for a stretch of five-plus minutes from late in the third quarter to early in the fourth while giving Mitchell Robinson a rest. Sims recorded a rebound, a turnover and a foul in his third career game.
Thibodeau had called Noel a “game-time” decision Monday, but after warming up, he was ultimately ruled out for a seventh straight game with the knee/hamstring issue that has lingered since the preseason.

The Pacers snapped a four-game slide with a 131-118 home win over San Antonio on Monday. Indiana opened the game by going 8 of 10 from 3-point range and taking a 43-31 lead after one quarter. By halftime, the Pacers extended the margin to 78-56 and had five players in double figures. San Antonio couldn’t get closer than 18 until the final few minutes.
Caris LeVert played 24 minutes vs. the Spurs with 16 points and seven assists. LeVert only played in the opening half of his debut on Saturday, but coach Rick Carlisle was eager to ramp him up. “The hope is that there wouldn’t be a long period where there’s a restriction but right now it’s just really hard to say, it’s really impossible to say,” Carlisle said of LeVert’s restrictions. Domantas Sabonis racked up 24 points, 13 rebounds, six assists and one steal in the win.
Indiana played without guards Malcolm Brogdon (hamstring), Jeremy Lamb (sprained ankle) and forwards T.J. Warren (foot) and Isaiah Jackson (knee). Brogdon said he “feels good” and will play Wednesday. He has missed the past three. Brogdon currently leads Indiana in scoring (23.4 points per game) and assists (7.0 per contest) and a backcourt with both him and LeVert could provide significant challenges for even the best NBA defense.
The Pacers and Knicks will meet four times over the next two months. Indiana will visit Madison Square Garden on Nov. 15 and Jan. 4, while the Knicks return to Gainbridge Fieldhouse on Jan. 8. Pacers forward Justin Holiday played for the Knicks for the 2016-17 season.
Brogdon’s return will return TJ McConnell to the bench. McConnell racked up 10 points, 10 assists, three rebounds, three steals and a block on Monday.
