On August 11, the first major sports league in the United States crowns its victor. The Portland Timbers and Orlando City beat their respective opponents in last week’s MLS Is Back Semifinals. The two squads hit the pitch for the MLS Championship on Tuesday, August 11. Check out a recap of what happened that allowed both teams to get here. Portland Timbers over Philadelphia Union 2-1
The first semifinal happened on August 5. Portland battled the Philadelphia Union. Even though Philadelphia had rocked their previous opponents, the Timbers entered the semifinal the favorite.
Portland used scores off a couple of beautiful corner kicks to grab the win. The first corner happened early in the match at around the 13th minute mark. Diego Valeri landed a perfect corner to Jeremy Ebobisse. Kai Wagner stood their like a statue while Ebobisse knocked it past Philadelphia goal-keeper Andre Blake.
The second corner-led goal happened at the 70th minute. Diego Valeri sent it into the box again. Dario Zuparic headed it towards Sebastian Blanco, who then got it past Blake.
The two goals were enough for the Timbers to get past the Union.
Orlando City over Minnesota United 3-1
The very next day, August 6, Orlando City made it look easy. The scoring started in the 36th minute when Nani used an unbelievable pass to get it pat Tyler Miller off two touches.
The second goal also came off Nani’s foot. This time, the Portuguese player provided an unbelievable curled shot past the Minnesota star goalie.
Orlando City’s third goal happened in extra time. With United pushing forward, Benji Michel took a pass from Nani and sprinted to the box. He easily knocked it past Miller for the third goal.
