The 2022 Rio Open is a men’s tennis tournament played on Jockey Club Brasileiro outdoor clay courts in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. The event is slated for February 14-20 and will welcome clay-court specialists, who will use the tournament as preparation ahead of the Roland Garros.
It will mark the first Rio Open since 2020 – due to the cancellation of the 2021 event – and feature some of the best tennis players on tour. The list of participants includes five of the top-20 rated players, including Matteo Berrettini (no.6) as the top seed.
Joining the Italian tennis star are Casper Ruud (no.8), Diego Schwartzman (no.15), Pablo Carreño Busta (no.16), and Cristian Garín (no.20). Rounding up the list of the top-eight seeded players are Lorenzo Sonego (no.22), Carlos Alcaraz (no.29), and Albert Ramos Viñolas (no.32).
Interestingly, the Rio Open has featured a different winner across the last seven iterations. What’s more, no player has managed to reach two finals to date, which is something the former champions in Cristian Garín, Diego Schwartzman, and Pablo Cuevas will look to change.

- Matteo Berrettini
The no.1 seeded player of the 2022 Rio Open, Matteo Berrettini, will be under the spotlight as he looks to continue his strong start to the season. The Italian tennis star kicked off the 2022 season with a deep run at the 2022 Australia Open, where he made it all the way into the semi-finals, only to lose to the eventual champion, Rafael Nadal (1-3).
Still, he had shown good qualities, with convincing wins against Monfils (3-2), Carreno (3-1), Alcaraz (3-2), Kozlov (3-1), and Nakashima (3-1).
Berrettini has been solid in recent years and sports a 66.67% career win rate on clay. In 2021, he went 14/4 on clay and 12/5 and 12/4 in the years prior, so he is clearly improving. But while he is the top-rated player and in excellent form, the field consists of other players who are more than capable of challenging him.
- Diego Schwartzman
Current world no.15, Diego Schwartzman has not been as impressive in Australia, where he crashed out of R2 against O’Connell (0-3). However, we would take his showings on hard courts with a grain of salt since they don’t in any way indicate how the Argentinian tennis star will do in Brazil.
There is no secret that Schwartzman isn’t a hard-court specialist (53.33% career win rate), but he tends to do much better on clay. Over his career, Schwartzman has won 66.28% clay-court matches, with his record across the last three years showing 12/8, 15/5, and 15/9.
Furthermore, he is 5/1 on clay courts in 2022. He has recently made two deep runs in Cordoba Open and Argentina Open, reaching the semis and finals, respectively. With the form Schwartzman has been showing, he is definitely a man to watch – and let’s not forget, he won the Rio Open in 2018.
- Carlos Alcaraz
When we talk clay-court specialists, Carlos Alcaraz deserves to be mentioned. Over his four-year career, Alcaraz has won an astounding 74.23% of clay-court matches, which is impressive, to say the least, and he was 22/7 and 29/7 in 2021 and 2020, which translates to a 78.5% win rate across the last two years.
Admittedly, he has yet to win Rio Open, but Alcaraz had appeared in the tournament only once – in 2020 when he lost in R2 against Coria. Still, there’s a reason to feel optimistic about the 18-year-old who enjoyed a solid start to the season reached R3 at AO, where he nearly won against Berrettini.
If Alcaraz can find his rhythm, he might surprise many and is undoubtedly a player to watch.
