No coronavirus issue announcements from MLB teams
St. Louis and Miami sent the league into a tailspin. If you didn’t read last week’s MLB update, here’s a recap.
The Miami Marlins came out with a bunch of Covid positives. How many? 20 total Marlins, including 18 players, tested positive. That followed with the St. Louis Cardinals and their positives.
For the entire week, the main discussion from every corner in the baseball universe centered around canceling the 2020 MLB Season. It got so bad that the negativity spilled into the National Football League.
But calmer heads appear to have prevailed. Not only did MLB not show any positive tests in the past week, players now seem to understand how important it is to follow the rules.
MLB reschedules miss`ed games
Major League Baseball came out with a schedule to make up for the missed games. All told, MLB had to reschedule 24 missed games.
That’s a lot of games to make up for in a shortened season. But, baseball has a plan to do it.
MLB will scratch off days and have teams play double-headers. You won’t hear an argument form the Cardinals or Marlins.
Miami and St. Louis want to get back onto the diamond. The Marlins were 7-3 before having to go to the dugout. That put them on pace to challenge for the NL East.
The Cardinals were just 2-3. But no team in the NL Central had a massive lead over any other squad.
MLB Top 5 Power Rankings: That’s how positive it’s gotten
It’s gotten so positive that we think it’s okay to get back to Power Rankings. We’re going to list our Top 5 from each league. Why just 5 teams from the AL and NL?
Only 5 squads make the playoffs from the NL and AL. Here goes!
American League Top 5
- Oakland A’s 12-4 – The Athletics have the best record in baseball.
- New York Yankees 10-6 – Pitching, hitting . . . is there anything NYY isn’t good at?
- Minnesota Twins 10-6 – Expect the Twins to pull away from the Tigers and Tribe in the AL Central.
- Tampa Bay Rays 8-8 – The Rays have yet to hit their stride. They should soon.
- Cleveland Indians 10-7 – Houston has fallen to 6-9 while Cleveland has gotten better. The Tribe could grab a wildcard.
Top 5 NL Teams
- Chicago Cubs 10-3 –David Ross’s management style and decisions are paying off big time.
- Colorado Rockies 11-4 – The Rockies’ +31 run differential is the best in baseball.
- L.A. Dodgers 11-5 – They’re still the most balanced team in MLB. However, both the Rockies and Cubs have better records . . . for now.
- Atlanta Braves 11-6 – Even without Mike Soroka, the Braves’ team ERA is a sweet 3.58.
- San Diego Padres 9-7 – Fernando Tatis Jr. has 8 home runs, is batting .333, and has drove in 18 runs in 16 games.
