Kentucky Derby: Tiz the Law just won Travers, is He the Heavy Favorite to Win the Race?

2020 Kentucky Derby Info

  • When: Saturday, Sep. 5 at 6:30 pm ET
  • Where: Churchill Downs, Louisville, KY
  • Weather: Partly Cloudy

Tiz the Law is bred to be a champion

The first thing to notice about the Tiz the Law is his breeding. It’s difficult to understand why a racing outfit with much more money than Sackatoga Stables didn’t purchase Tiz the Law.

The top-rated 3-year-old’s sire, Constitution, won the Florida Derby and the Donn Handicap. Those are both major Grade 1 races. Tapit, the top sire in North America, sired Constitution.

That means Tiz the Law has Tapit on his father’s side. Tapit earned just $557,000 on the racetrack. So far, Tapit’s kids have won over $157 million on the track.

The Law’s broodmare is Tizfiz. His grandsire on his broodmare’s side is Tiznow, the only 2-time winner of the Breeders’ Cup Classic.

Tiz the Law is bred to run all day and to run fast.

Sackatoga Stables and Barclay Tagg paired up to win the 2003 Kentucky Derby

Back in 2003, Sackatoga Stables sent a gelding named Funny Cide to trainer Barclay Tagg. Tagg campaigned Funny Cide to victories in the Kentucky Derby and Preakness.

Sackatoga and Tagg have been in this position before. They’re in it again. Only this time, they’ve got a monster of a horse.

Funny Cide went off at around 20/1 to win the Derby. Tiz the Law will go off at much less than that on Saturday.

What odds will Tiz the Law offer on Sep. 5?

Right now, Tiz the Law is a -135 chalk to win the Kentucky Derby. Those odds equate to 3/5 on the horse racing tote board.

Are the odds fair? Since 2013 starting with Orb, favorites have won the Kentucky Derby. This includes Maximum Security who, although denied the Derby victory due to a steward’s inquiry, did cross the finish line first last year as the favorite.

Horseplayers know this. They will pounce on Tiz the Law on the first Saturday in September. Not only that, but the Law has won four straight graded races and three straight Grade 1 races.

He dominated his rivals in both the Belmont Stakes and the Travers. Expect similar 3/5 odds on Sep 5. The Law’s odds might drop to 1-to-2, which means for every $2 bettors risk on Tiz the Law, they get back $1 in profit.

Art Collector, the second-choice to win the Derby, will skip the race due to a small injury. His absence will make Tiz the Law an even bigger favorite.

Recent Derby history says that no matter Tiz the Law’s the odds, he’s going to be incredibly difficult to beat on September 5.
